Debating whether to teach it as we also live in the pnw. But I was not planning on including plate tectonics. My older child had it in his ml book from when they were in a Waldorf school but there was no explanation! I appreciate your insight.

Great question, Anna. The Pacific Ring of Fire came from a lesson about plate tectonics and the mountains that are created as a result. So, it probably is partly because we’re in the northwest that they did that page. There is some debate in the Waldorf world about whether you should include plate tectonics in this block. I chose to include it because the kids find it fascinating and most of them are not going to a Waldorf high school where it would be covered more in depth (I think in 9th grade?)

Is this because you’re in the north west or would you teach this no matter where you are?

Hi, Mardi, thanks for the compliment. I actually have never taught children cursive. All of my students came to me already knowing it. I have talked to lots of teachers about it, though, and the recommendation I have heard more than any other is a program called Handwriting Without Tears. You can find it here http://www.hwtears.com/hwt. By sixth grade, as long as they have pretty well mastered cursive writing, I am fine with students beginning to develop their own individual style. On less formal writing that I give my students I write with my own cursive/print combination and I think it’s good for them to see it. Somehow I stick with my “teacher writing” on the chalkboard, though. I just can’t print on the chalkboard for some reason.

Is there a book you recommend for cursive writing when teaching students?
