The play is performed choral-style, though you can pull out individual lines for specific characters to play. Though I used this play with my large class of 28, the script really lends itself to classes of all sizes. For each story, the class is split in half and each half of the class plays the role of one of the animals (foxes and cats, elephants and rabbits, birds and beasts — and a bat, of course.) We used the stories of the saints to practice reading and writing, practicing phonics rules along the way. My second graders took some huge leaps in their skill development during this block and I was hard-pressed to keep up with them. This guide will show you just how I did it — differentiating the skill-building work to meet the needs of a variety of students.

In this block, our phonics work focused around long vowels, with the silent e and vowel teams. This guide will show you how to run a phonics program alongside the imaginative content of the saint stories so you can either use the stories and phonics rules I used or model my method and choose your own stories and phonics.

The stories of the saints are beautiful and full of wisdom, you’ll enjoy telling them and finding images that will resonate in your work.

We started off the year with math and a solid introduction to place value. After a good introduction to the quality of numbers and the four processes in first grade, my eager-beaver 2nd graders were ready to tackle problems with double digits and they were so excited to find out about the tools we learned to use in this block.

This guide is a translation of a document that was prepared for Waldorf schools in Holland. I received it in my teacher training and it is an excellent resource for teachers who do not have access to a trained remedial teacher to do the assessment.
