In this conclusion to the dramatic Norse tales, we focused on three main stories — but they were good ones! They provided the backdrop for writing and other language arts skills. You’ll find the daily content presented in a handy chart, including the review and bookwork activities we engaged in each day. I haven’t included all of the daily lessons with the new content, because the new content presentation was fairly simple (just those three stories.)

We were learning entirely online for this block, though I didn’t find that this format interfered with our typical main lesson rhythm. If we had been in person we might have been able to take up more projects or perform our poems for friends and family, but we worked through the content and felt just as immersed in the material as ever.

In block one, we had fun exploring the different types of animals and learning a little more about the human being along the way.

In block two, you’ll receive my Animal Project assignment, including the step-by-step process I used to lead my students through this project. This block focuses on the concepts of fractions, with fun explorations that help students realize how much they already know about fractions. It then dives deep into adding and subtracting, first with “friendly” fractions and before diving headlong into finding common denominators and changing improper fractions into mixed numbers.

It was a short, whirlwind of a block, but we learned so much and did lots of practice! Here are some of the concepts we covered in this block.

• familiar fractions
• how to write fractions
• how to draw fractions
• adding and subtracting fractions
• fraction terms (like numerator, denominator, improper fraction and mixed number)
• comparing fractions
• mixed numbers
• improper fractions
• adding with different denominators
• finding equivalent fractions

And so much more! Though we only had 12 short days to cover ALL of this content, we were fast and furious with our explorations and focused on lots of practice!

It was more challenging to teach some of the more complex concepts online, but that just means that I have REALLY thought through how to help my students understand the math concepts best.
